What is an Alderman and why you should attend?

An alderman is your elected representative to Chicago’s City Council, the legislative branch of government for Chicago.  The City of Chicago is divided into fifty legislative districts/wards. Each ward is represented by an alderman who is elected by their constituency for a four year term to represent the interests of their ward residents and bring improvements to their wards.

An alderman has wide discretion and authority over many aspects within the ward from major projects to everyday issues like zoning, developments, business licenses, liquor licenses to pot holes, and replacement trash cans.   The City Council has authority to enact laws/regulations and levy taxes for the City of Chicago as well as the authority to confirm appointments by the Mayor of Chicago to the governing boards of the “sister” taxing agencies such as the Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Schools, and Chicago Public Library.

The West Loop is part of four different wards (25th, 27th, 28th, and 42nd) and is represented by four different aldermen. The 25th Ward will have a runoff election on Tuesday April 2.  Other runoff elections on April 2nd include citywide offices for Mayor and Treasurer.
