What is an Alderman and why you should attend?

An alderman is your elected representative to Chicago’s City Council, the legislative branch of government for Chicago.  The City of Chicago is divided into fifty legislative districts/wards. Each ward is represented by an alderman who is elected by their constituency for a four year term to represent the interests of their ward residents and bring improvements to their wards.

An alderman has wide discretion and authority over many aspects within the ward from major projects to everyday issues like zoning, developments, business licenses, liquor licenses to pot holes, and replacement trash cans.   The City Council has authority to enact laws/regulations and levy taxes for the City of Chicago as well as the authority to confirm appointments by the Mayor of Chicago to the governing boards of the “sister” taxing agencies such as the Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Schools, and Chicago Public Library.

The West Loop is part of four different wards (25th, 27th, 28th, and 42nd) and is represented by four different aldermen. Only the 25th, 27th, and 28th wards have competitive races for the Feb 26, 2019 election. We have invited candidates from the competitive aldermanic races for the West Loop to participate.

Attend the forum and learn how each candidate will address concerns and issues facing the West Loop.   There will also be an opportunity to meet & greet and talk to the participating candidates and their campaign staff.
