Development Proposal
On Monday, September 12, 2016, owner Shawn Uldridge presented Publishing House Bed & Breakfast, which is planned to open at 1134 W. Washington Blvd in the spring of 2017. The former Museum of Holography, the building includes a garden/basement level and three stories above.
The project will include an 11-room bed and breakfast, a personal residence for the building owners, 3,100 sq ft of retail on the first floor (planned to include an Italian espresso bar and potentially restored items from the Museum of Holography), and a 2,100 sq ft basement restaurant (70 seats). There will also be a smaller communal space as part of the bed and breakfast. It is expected that the restaurant will have a wine theme, with small plates for dining. There is no outdoor seating planned for the restaurant or espresso bar, but it could be added in the future. The B&B and espresso bar are expected to employ 4-5 people.
There will be two parking spaces, though a parking lift could be installed to increase this amount.
The owners to not plan to have a rooftop deck, but one could be added in the future.
Publishing House Bed & Breakfast plans to do a soft opening on April 10, 2017 and an official opening on May 1. Rates for the B&B are expected to start at $179/night and go up to $309/night with an average of $241/night.
The existing building is zoned as DX-3 ; no zoning change is needed for the proposed use.
Committee Feedback
The committee voiced support for this proposed development, both for the proposed use and for the developer’s efforts to restore the building. We look forward to welcoming Publishing House B&B in the spring.
Next Steps
No zoning change or other approvals are needed for this development to open, however the NoWL Development Committee will provide a letter to Alderman Walter Burnett in support of this development.
