About Ed’s Legs: Everyone knew Ed Steinbrecher and his saloon at the corner of Randolph and Canal. Steinbrecher lost his legs in a railroad accident in the 1850s and, with a young wife & child on the way, he was in a real pickle until his neighbors – in what is now the West Loop – purchased him a saloon to support his young family. And then, a few years later when the city spiked saloon fees in an attempt to shut down Ed’s bar & other’s like it, his community rallied again and kept Steinbrecher’s open until the tax was rescinded.  Ed’s legs may have been lost, but he was not without a community to lift him up.

At Illuminated Brew Works, they look to Ed & his patrons as inspiration. It’s our communities & the small businesses that grow out of them that keep Chicago unique & strong. So, when you drink “Ed’s Legs,” raise your glass to Ed Steinbrecher, his neighbors & patrons, & all the good people who work hard to keep Chicago strong.
